Gameboard of the Gods introduced religious investigator Justin March and Mae Koskinen, the beautiful supersoldier assigned to protect him. Together they have been charged with investigating reports of the supernatural and the return of the gods, both inside the Republic of United North America and out. With this highly classified knowledge comes a shocking revelation: Not only are the gods vying for human control, but the elect—special humans marked by the divine—are turning against one another in bloody fashion.
Their mission takes a new twist when they are assigned to a diplomatic delegation headed by Lucian Darling, Justin’s old friend and rival, going into Arcadia, the RUNA’s dangerous neighboring country. Here, in a society where women are commodities and religion is intertwined with government, Justin discovers powerful forces at work, even as he struggles to come to terms with his own reluctantly acquired deity.
Meanwhile, Mae—grudgingly posing as Justin’s concubine—has a secret mission of her own: finding the illegitimate niece her family smuggled away years ago. But with Justin and Mae resisting the resurgence of the gods in Arcadia, a reporter’s connection with someone close to Justin back home threatens to expose their mission—and with it the divine forces the government is determined to keep secret.

The Immortal Crown takes everything I loved about the first book in the Age of X series and expands it in all the best ways. Richelle Mead continues to build this fascinating world, blending mythology, politics, action, and romance into a story that is nearly impossible to put down.
One of my favorite aspects of this installment was seeing more of the world beyond what we experienced in the first book. The journey to Arcadia introduces new cultures, new dangers, and new challenges for Mae and Justin. The contrast between societies was both intriguing and unsettling, adding another layer of depth to an already richly developed world.
Mae remains one of my favorite heroines. Her determination, loyalty, and tendency to charge headfirst into danger make her endlessly entertaining to follow. At the same time, Justin's protective side shines through more than ever in this book, and watching him struggle with the choices before him added a great deal of emotional weight to the story.
The relationship between Mae and Justin continues to be one of the strongest parts of the series. Their feelings for each other grow stronger, but the obstacles standing between them feel very real and heartbreaking. Every step forward seems to come with a new complication, which kept me completely invested in their story.
I also loved learning more about the gods and seeing how their influence continues to shape the lives of the characters. The mythology becomes even more complex and fascinating, and it feels like every revelation opens the door to even bigger mysteries.
And that ending! Richelle Mead delivers a cliffhanger that left me stunned and desperate for the next book. The twists, connections, and surprises throughout the novel were brilliantly executed, and I found myself thinking about the story long after I finished reading.
Overall, The Immortal Crown is a fantastic sequel that expands the world, deepens the characters, and raises the stakes in every possible way. Fans of Gameboard of the Gods will not be disappointed, and I can't wait to see what happens next in this incredible series.
