Tuesday Reviews: The Demon Court by Emma Hamm

He is temptation, but she will not be tempted.

As a child, Selene was left at the foot of the White Tower—given to the sorceresses who train those with magic. Her life has been spent honing her powers. But she can't fully join their ranks until she fulfills a single, impossible task. Bring the Demon King, Lust, to his knees.

Lust has ruled his kingdom for centuries. He is the reason his people live without remorse and indulge in their senses. Life is mundane and boring…until he runs into a dark haired enchantress with eyes the color of the night sky.

With one whispered sentence, she changes everything.

"I'm the beginning of something new."

Suddenly, the weight of centuries consumes him. He tries to use his powers of lust to sway her. He can bend the emotion, manipulate it, use that lust to control anyone he wants. But she's a blank slate. He can't feel anything inside her mind but ice and defiance.

All it took was one sentence to get into his castle, even less to capture his attention. And suddenly, the weakest of the sorceresses finds herself in a game of wits she has to control.

A game of deceiving a demon king while desperately trying not to fall in love with a creature who cannot feel anything but lust.

The Demon Court was such a fun fantasy romance, and it reminded me exactly why I enjoy Emma Hamm's books so much. Her world-building is always one of the biggest highlights for me, and this book was no exception. The floating island setting felt imaginative and unique, creating a magical backdrop that pulled me into the story from the very beginning.

One thing Emma Hamm does exceptionally well is blending romance with fantasy without losing sight of either element. The romance felt natural within the larger story, and the emotional moments hit just as strongly as the action and world-building.

I know a lot of readers are picking this one up because it's a steamier release from Emma, and I thought she handled it really well. The romance and chemistry fit the story perfectly and never felt forced. The balance between passion, emotion, and character development worked for me, especially given who the male lead is.

Speaking of which, Lust absolutely stole the show. He was easily my favorite character in the book. As the embodiment of Lust, he's charming, confident, and endlessly fascinating. I loved how fluid and inclusive his character felt, and his journey exploring emotions beyond desire added surprising depth to his storyline. There was so much more to him than I expected.

Selene was a bit more complicated for me. I loved the enemies-to-lovers dynamic between her and Lust, and their chemistry kept me invested throughout the story. However, there were times when her internal back-and-forth became frustrating. I understood why she struggled with her feelings, but there were moments where I wanted her to make a decision and stick with it. Thankfully, the strength of the relationship and overall story outweighed those frustrations.

Overall, The Demon Court is a wonderfully immersive fantasy romance with creative world-building, memorable characters, and a fantastic enemies-to-lovers relationship. If you're looking for a fantasy romance with a unique setting, strong chemistry, and an approachable introduction to monster romance, this is definitely one worth checking out.
